Solar Power’s Early Days
The transformation of sunlight into usable electricity using photovoltaics and the photovoltaic effect aka solar power, this method of producing electricity has been used in many ways from small pocket calculators, home and business power systems even satellites can have and do use solar power.
Back in the 1860s there was some movement in the development of solar power technologies as there was a view that fossil fuels would run out, however in the early 20th century this research was soon quashed due to an increasing availability of petroleum and coal.
Again in the 1970s through to the early 80s growth in the photovoltaic power systems industry started to pick up, then again cheap oil slowed things down for solar right up untill the mid 1990s.
From the mid 1990s right up to today and especially in the last 10 years the solar power industry has taken off lick a rocket. The industry has grown by roughly 45% per year since 1998 and it is estimated that a total of 145GW has been installed around the world and counting.
